5 Reasons To Write Down Everything You Eat For A Week

Posted by: J.N. In: List

I’ve got a question for you… Can you remember what you had for lunch last Wednesday?

If not then don’t worry – neither can I! It’s a sad fact that the majority of us don’t even bother to remember what we eat and yet if we did, I’m sure our “weight loss problems” would soon disappear.

One of the biggest problems in weight loss is not knowing where you’ve gone wrong or where you can improve. If you can’t remember what you’ve eaten and when – then how can you expect to change your nasty habits and move on?

That’s why it’s so important to write down everything you eat for a week. But there’s also a few more reasons why it pays to do this:

1. You Snack A Lot More Than You Realize
Snacking is a terrible habit that almost everyone does. Although it’s pretty safe to do when you’re not on a diet, it’s on a parr with murder if you’re trying to keep the weight off! Make sure you carry a little note pad around with you at all times and jot down everything that passes your lips. A bag of chips in the morning, a cookie before you set off home – it all adds up – and noting it down gives you the ability to see exactly how much you snack.

2. You’re Not Eating Enough Fruit And Vegetables
Are you hitting your five servings of fruit and veggies every day? Maybe you reckon that you’re “close”. Chances are, you’re sometimes only getting two or three – if that. Once you’ve written down everything you ate during the week, look back and see where you could fit in some fresh fruit (swap one of your many snacks for an apple, grab a fruit bag instead of a candy bar with your lunch-time sandwich). And if your meals are a veg-free zone, make sure you start including some salad or cooked vegetables.

3. You Drink WAY Too Much Soda
All those tasty soda drinks you’ve been drinking actually have calories too – and they don’t even fill you up! If you drink 5 cans of coke a day, you’re consuming 175 grams of pure sugar! Knowing exactly how much soda you’re drinking will give you a clear perception of exactly how much sugar you’re inadvertently consuming each week – it could even be a quick way to cut out some sugar from your diet painlessly!

4. You Spend Too Much On Junk
Now this list is going to become ultra-handy. In addition to watching your food intake, you’re also watching the budget. Keep a note of where you eat – or how much you spend on food – if you’re buying it out. You might realize that junk food is costing you more than your main meals: over the course of a day, a burger and fries, a candy bar, a bag of chips and a couple of sodas can top $15.

5. You Don’t Have Enough Variety In Your Diet
It’s easy to eat the stuff we think is healthy but the fact is that if we don’t have enough variety in our diets, we’re far from being perfectly healthy. Noting down everything you eat will give you a fool-proof way to see if you’re getting the healthiest variety in your diet or not!
